The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 to 10 and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process. The implementation of solar and green jobs stemmed from the organizing work of the People for Community Recovery.

In May 2018, the Chicago Housing Authority signed a $145,000 contract to develop and implement a solar and energy efficiency training curriculum for residents to promote entrepreneurship and self-sufficiency. In October of the same year, the city of Chicago called for developers to construct a solar farm on a brownfield next to the community. However, the housing complex planned on a “Garden City” model to take advantage of the green spaces around the Calumet waterway system, has been exposed to toxic chemicals. The ABLA Homes were a series of four separate housing projects on the west side of the city. Throughout most of their lifetime, the 3596 units hosted more than people.

As of February 21st, 2012, this location is marked as a historic place of interest. While life here had been peaceful for most of the 60s and the 70s, the area was involved in the City of Chicago’s Operation Clean Sweep. A joint effort carried out by both local police and several government agencies, this operation eventually led to plans for the redevelopment of multiple state-provided homes. Factions of the Black Gangster Disciples have been known to operate in the area. As with many other housing projects drugs, violence, trafficking, and a general disrespect for the law were an everyday issue at ABLA. A particularly notorious episode, the shooting of 52-year-old Ruth McCoy, took place here in April 1987.

The event is described in ex-president Barack Obama’s book Dreams From My Father. Eventually, residents of this housing project grew tired of the unbearable living conditions and continuous danger. A group of them filed, in 1991, a class-action lawsuit against the city of Chicago and the local housing authority. They lamented issues with plumbing, lighting, and rodent infestations.

In the 70s, Cheryl Johnson said Hazel Johnson was able to connect industrial pollution to public health issues, especially its impact on communities of color. Nathaniel Jenkins, who’s been living in the neighborhood for most of his life, said while the conditions still have improved due to the efforts of the Johnsons, he’s still concerned. He said he has bronchitis and that there’s many residents with asthma. Much smaller than its counterparts on the Western and Southern sides of the city, the Julia C. Lathrop Homes complex sits between the Lincoln Park and North Center neighborhoods.
The organization hopes to decrease unemployment rates, as the unemployment rate for Riverdale is five times the citywide average. Providing jobs nearby the community will cut commute times and increase employment rates. These factors contributed to health burdens in the community through water and air pollution, including asthma and respiratory illness. The water had a light bronze color and came through the water pipes with little to no pressure. A survey found that 51% of pregnancies in 1992 reported birth abnormalities. But CHA officials said there are no plans to redevelop Altgeld into a mixed-income development.
Neighborhood
And there’s the added benefit that 130th station and three other new stations will spur on badly needed development at those intersections. Dearborn Homes remains one of the most dangerous places within the city of Chicago. Today, gang violence remains a problem in both Altgeld Gardens and its surrounding neighborhoods. Members of the Black Disciples, the Gangster Disciples, and the Black P. Stones – encouraged by the lack of a proper police force in the area – use this complex as their base of operation. In 1995, the Department of Housing and Urban Development took over management of this complex and scheduled it for demolition. Was the Altgeld Gardens Neighborhood part of the Underground Railroad?
The river was a convenient means of transportation and allowed for easy access to other waterways which led to the emergence of Altgeld Gardens as a center of industry. Steel, the Ford Company, and Pullman all built factories close to the river and encouraged the development of residential housing and commercial property in the nearby vicinity. The localized industry helped Altgeld Gardens mature into a strong-willed working-class neighborhood. Altgeld Gardens was nicknamed Chicago's 'toxic donut' due to having the highest concentration of hazardous waste sites in the United States. There were 50 landfills and 382 industrial facilities surrounding the area, including the Acme Steel plant and the Pullman factory, with many of the sites unregulated.

That is exactly the plan and the hope, according to the Leah Mooney, the Red Line extension project manager. There’s practically nothing in the way of retail or food options in or around Altgeld Gardens, said Lou Turner, clinical assistant professor in urban and regional planning at the University of Illinois.
This is also one of the only two State Street Corridor projects that still exist. This area has undergone some drastic changes of the past several years. The Neighborhood possibly represents one of the worst examples in the entire United States of criminal disregard for humanity. Surrounded by Toxic waste the individuals and children living in this area were subject to unhealthy materials and living conditions. Without the help of the EPA, the community is left to collect data to show proof of health burdens and the need for policy change.
Altgeld Gardens is a modest, easy-going Chicago neighborhood less than a 20-minute drive from the Loop. Located in the southern stretches of the city and surrounded by suburbs, Altgeld Gardens has all the convenience of a Chicago community without the hustle and bustle of city living. The neighborhood park provides residents with a little bit of green space and the perks of an onsite gym, swimming pool, assembly hall and local basketball leagues. Summertime gospel festivals, neighborhood barbecues and annual parades round out the community events in Altgeld Gardens which makes this far south side section of Chicago a tight-knit group. Starting in August 2017, the Altgeld Gardens community began a community air management program to record toxic air levels in the area to influence government to make policy changes. Data recorded will help inform residents to make decisions about community mobilization and influence policy change, especially when lack of government funding prevents government entities from doing so.
